Mithat Sancar, the co-chair of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), said in a live TV interview on Monday that accusations of seperatism and having links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were part of the psychological warfare conducted against them by officials of the ruling alliance.

Asked to comment on Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s claim about HDP being ‘an extension of the PKK’, Sancar said they did not have links to the PKK or any other organisation, and they were determined to pursue the path of democratic politics despite the severe repression they have been facing.

He said:

“We have a supporter base of about eight to ten million. Can anyone say that 10 million people are in favour of secession from Turkey? No. And we do not have links to PKK, or any other organisation. We have stated this many times before. We take our decisions by our free will. I wish you would join us in one of our party councils or executive council meetings. Our executive council meetings take no less than seven hours. We have the largest party council in Turkey.”

He added.

“HDP is determined to insist upon the path of democratic politics despite all attacks. It continues to pursue this path with great determination for a democratic resolution of issues in a unified Turkey.”

Sancar, a professor of public and constitutional law, was re-elected co-chair in HDP’s fifth conference on 3 July.
