Elif Tuğral, who was arrested in October while pregnant over alleged ties to the Gülen movement, on Friday gave birth at a Turkish hospital where gendarmes stood guard at her room, the tr724 news website reported, citing Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, an opposition deputy and rights activist.

Turkish law requires postponement of the arrest of pregnant women until they give birth and the infant reaches the age of six months; however, dozens of pregnant women have been arrested as part of a large-scale crackdown targeting followers of the movement.

The Turkish government accuses the movement of masterminding the coup, although it denies any involvement in it.

Turkish authorities have investigated over half a million people and imprisoned tens of thousands for alleged links to the group, including lawyers, doctors, judges, prosecutors and academics as well as people from other walks of life.

Tuğral was sentenced to six years, 10 months in prison by an İzmir court. Her case is pending at a regional appeals court.

Her husband was only allowed to see the baby for half an hour, he said, adding that his wife must return home according to the law.
