NATO’s Allied Land Command (LANDCOM) has deleted a tweet congratulating Turkey over its Victory Day, after Greece lodged a demarche saying that the post was “tasteless” and “unacceptable,” Greek Kathimerini newspaper reported on Wednesday.
LANDCOM’s tweet that was posted on Tuesday, was no longer visible by Wednesday evening, Kathimerini said.
Turkey marked the centenary of its War of Independence battle against Greece on Tuesday. Victory Day, celebrated in Turkey on Aug. 30, commemorates the 1922 battle of Dumlupinar, that saw Turkish forces defeat Greek forces in western Turkey. Turkish forces led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, launched a successful counter-offensive against the foreign occupying forces in the country, including Greece, following the World War I.
“Today is the 100th anniversary of Turkish Independence. We join our Turkish allies across NATO and beyond in celebration of their Victory and Turkish Armed Forces Day,” LANDCOM, said in the tweet, according to Kathimerini.
Greece’s permanent representative to the NATO filed a demarche condemning the tweet, the newspaper said, citing Greek Foreign Ministry.
