Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu blamed the United States for upsetting its balance over its relations with Turkey, Greece and Cyprus.

“The scales of the US were broken. It is extremely wrong for the US to upset this balance in order to please some certain lobbies,” Cavusoglu said during a live broadcast with the TVNET on Tuesday.

“The United States should not take sides among the allies,” he said, urging the Washington administration to backtrack from such “mistake.”

Turkey has long been at odds with Greece and Cyprus over a string of issues, including territorial claims over the Mediterranean. The tensions between Ankara and Athens have build up lately over the status of the Aegean islands, where Turkey blames Greece for “illegally” militarizing its islands in violation of international treaties. The United States says that Greece’s sovereignty over its Aegean islands is not disputed.

Last month, Washington announced that it has fully lifted defense trade restrictions for Cyprus for the fiscal year 2023, a move that also Turkey strongly condemned.

“No matter what, no matter against who, even if the whole world stands against us, we have to protect our interests, and we will,” Cavusoglu said.
