Turkey’s main opposition party leader said to a group of students during his visit in the United States that “they will free political prisoners” after they have assumed power, Voice of America (VOA) Turkish reported.

Responding to a student’s answer in Boston on Tuesday, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) said:

“It is politically wrong to imprison a politician, to imprison people because they have different opinions. People may think differently. It is not right to imprison people who have different opinions.”

In Turkey, most of the political activists and representatives of political parties who are currently incarcerated have been accused or convicted over “terrorism” charges, and a vast majority of these people consist of supporters, members and officials of the pro-Kurdish opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).

Despite his remarks in Boston, Kilicdaroglu earlier proposed an amnesty in Turkey and said that it should exclude terror-related cases.

He said late September:

“I must note, however, that the amnesty is to include only certain offenses. Cases related to terror, sexual abuse, rape and similar offenses will be excluded. The amnesty will cover only the victims of fate.”
