Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia is ready to welcome all sort of efforts to help to facilitate a settlement between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“Anything that is not words, but in deeds – and not in a bombastic, populist manner, but in reality, in a quiet and businesslike way – can contribute to the normalization of relations and the stabilization of the border situation, all this can be welcomed. Whether such high-profile actions and statements can actually contribute to this normalization, we’ll wait and see,” Peskov said, commenting on the US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s latest remarks.
“All this will be clear with time,” Russian state-run TASS news agency cited Peskov as saying on Monday.
Pelosi who paid a visit to Yerevan on the weekend, “strongly condemned” the “illegal and deadly attacks by Azerbaijan on Armenian territory.”
“The unsubstantiated and unfair accusations levelled by Pelosi against Azerbaijan are unacceptable (…) Pelosi is known as a pro-Armenian politician,” Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in response to US Speaker’s remarks on Sunday.
On Sep.12, Azerbaijan launched a military aggression against Armenia saying that it has taken “retaliatory” measures against Armenian armed forces’ “large-scale provocations.” Denying the allegations, Armenia accused Azerbaijan for shelling Armenian positions and occupying ten square kilometers of Armenian sovereign territory. The two-day conflict has ended with a truce on Sep.14 and left more than 250 casualties in total on both sides.
Turkey that sided with Baku and provided military support to the country during the Second Nagorno-Karabakh war in autumn 2020, also said that Pelosi’s statements over Azerbaijan were unacceptable.
Turkey’s Vise President Fuat Oktay on Monday blamed Pelosi for “sabotaging” the diplomatic efforts with her “biased” remarks which are incompatible with historical and current facts and completely “devoid of goodwill.”
Oktay also called on Washington administration to clarify whether Pelosi’s remarks reflect the United States’ official position.
