Pro Kurdish HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) members reacted to video footage on Saturday where a deputy who was stripped of her immunity was being detained and taken to the courthouse.
“The ill-treatment of our friend Semra Guzel, who is still a member of parliament, is nothing but the weakness of the political power. You will not be able to cover up your crimes with your pathetic shows. Semra Guzel is the will of the people and we will be with you until the end, we will not bow down!” said HDP Co-Chair Pervin Buldan on Twitter.
Guzel’s immunity was lifted on 1 March in the context of some photos taken in 2014 with a member of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), who she was engaged to before she was elected to the Turkish Grand Assembly.
HDP Group Deputy Chairwoman Meral Danis Bestaş also decried the constant effort by the police to keep her head down and said “You cannot make Semra or the Kurdish people bow down”
HDP Deputy Co-Chair Tayip Temel said that the ruling block tried to make them subdue “but they will not succeed”
Earlier in a written statement, HDP said “It is pathetic that those who cooperate with the mafia and gangs target our deputies,” adding that the immoral detention of Semra Guzel and using it as a propaganda material with a lowly and ugly language demonstrated the weakness of the government.
